At HBM we are dedicated to supporting students in need by providing essential resources that remove barriers to education. Our mission is to give hope and build futures by offering financial assistance, school supplies, and other basic necessities that help students remain in school and succeed academically.
Our Story
Hope Beyond Measure did not begin as an organization. It began with a teacher under a tree, one tuition bill, and a school that asked for help. Founded by Yani Batala together with Lanie and Jenny, it now supports students at Bantay National High School and Bantay Elementary School in Kalinga, Philippines.

A classroom under a tree
Lanie, once a scholarship student herself, came home to teach in Bantay. There was no school building yet: in June 2012 lessons happened under a tree. She was the pioneer teacher of what is now Bantay National High School.
THE PIONEERS
The first students of Bantay
Lanie’s first students were the pioneers of the Bantay school. They cleaned the grounds themselves. This is the school in its early days, then the Bantay extension of TCNHS.

A stage on a truck
In March 2013 the school held a recognition ceremony for its best students. The stage was Lanie’s truck, fitted with a bamboo frame, a canopy and the ceremony banner.
THE FIRST SCHOLARSHIP
Elizabeth and Victoria
Elizabeth, a single mother, asked Yani to help with her daughter Victoria’s tuition. Yani said yes and saw her through school. Victoria is an architect today. That one yes is where Hope Beyond Measure comes from.

Back to Bantay
Yani, Lanie and Jenny flew to the Philippines with slippers and snacks for Bantay National High School. They met the principal, the teachers and the students, and asked one question: who needs help to stay in school? They interviewed the students and began monthly support for the first scholars.
THE ROAD TO SCHOOL
An hour down the mountain
Most scholars live in the mountains. With no transportation on their side of the river, they walk about an hour down through the valley to this hanging bridge. On the far side a ride costs 50 cents per child; those without it walk another hour.
WHERE THERE IS NO BRIDGE
Crossing by boat
In other areas there is no bridge. Students cross the river by boat, about 50 cents per person each way.
WEEKENDS IN THE FIELD
Working for the fare
One of Lanie’s students. On weekends he works in the fields so he can pay for the ride to school on Monday.
FEBRUARY 2026
The school asks for more
The second trip brought haircuts, clothes and snacks, and time with the scholars. The school asked them to take on more students. Three people - Yani, Jenny and Lanie - decided to launch Hope Beyond Measure.
APRIL 2026
Launch
Hope Beyond Measure launched in April 2026. Friends committed to sponsor scholars, and monthly support no longer rested on three people alone.
JUNE 2026
Bantay Elementary joins
On the third trip, Bantay Elementary School joined the program. Today Hope Beyond Measure reaches 357 students across one high school and one elementary school, with 19 scholars on monthly support.
